Reasoning with Cardinal Directions: An Efficient Algorithm

چکیده
Direction relations between extended spatial objects are important commonsense knowledge. Recently, Goyal and Egenhofer proposed a formal model, called Cardinal Direction Calculus (CDC), for representing direction relations between connected plane regions. CDC is perhaps the most expressive qualitative calculus for directional information, and has attracted increasing interest from areas such as artificial intelligence, geographical information science, and image retrieval. Given a network of CDC constraints, the consistency problem is deciding if the network is realizable by connected regions in the real plane. This paper provides a cubic algorithm for checking consistency of basic CDC constraint networks. As one byproduct, we also show that any consistent network of CDC constraints has a canonical realization in digital plane. The cubic algorithm can also been adapted to cope with disconnected regions, in which case the current best algorithm is of time complexity O(n).

On the Robustness of Qualitative Distance- and Direction-Reasoning*
This paper focuses on spatial information derived from the composition of two pairs of cardinal directions (e.g., North and North-East) and approximate distances (e.g., near and far), i.e., given the approximate distances a1 (A, B) and a2 (B, C) and the cardinal directions c1 (A, B) and c2 (B, C), what are a3 (A, C) and c3 (A, C)? Spatial reasoning about cardinal directions and approximate dist...
متن کاملComposition Algorithms for Cardinal Direction Relations
We present a formal model for qualitative spatial reasoning with cardinal directions that is based on a recent proposal in the literature. We use our formal framework to study the composition operation for the cardinal direction relations of this model. We consider progressively more expressive classes of cardinal direction relations and give composition algorithms for these classes. Finally, w...
متن کاملGraph-based Consistency Checking in Spatial Information System
Consistency checking of cardinal directions is one of the important problems in qualitative spatial reasoning. This paper presents a graph model to visually represent direction specifications. In the model, nodes represent regions occupied by objects, and directed edges indicate direction relationships between objects. This graph model can be applied not only to consistency checking, but also t...
متن کاملCardinal directions between spatial objects: the pairwise-consistency problem
The paper formalizes an open-problem (called by the authors the pairwise-consistency problem) which is relevant in the context of cardinal directions among extended objects, proposes an efficient algorithmic solution for it, discusses the implementation of the algorithm and briefly reports the numerical results obtained by running the code.
متن کاملAn efficient extension of the Chebyshev cardinal functions for differential equations with coordinate derivatives of non-integer order
In this study, an effective numerical method for solving fractional differential equations using Chebyshev cardinal functions is presented. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. An operational matrix of fractional order integration is derived and is utilized to reduce the fractional differential equations to system of algebraic equations. In addition, illustrative examples...
